Kathmandu, Aug 11: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will officially recognize Palestine as an independent nation during the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

The decision follows similar considerations by Britain, France, and Canada. Albanese stated that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has pledged to Australia that it will dismantle military and arms bases, conduct general elections, and acknowledge Israel’s right to exist.

“Recognition of the two states is one of humanity’s best hopes for ending violence in the Middle East and ending conflict, suffering and hunger in Gaza,” Albanese said on Monday.

Israel, under mounting pressure to agree to a ceasefire, condemned the move, saying recognition of Palestine would be “rewarding terrorism.”

Meanwhile, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that five people have died from hunger and malnutrition since Saturday, bringing the total death toll to over 61,000 since the start of Israeli military operations.
