Macron Names Defense Minister Lecornu as France’s New Prime Minister

Kathmandu, Sept 10: French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu as the country’s new prime minister, describing him as a trusted ally who has successfully delivered many of the president’s initiatives.
This is the fourth change of prime minister in a year. Former Prime Minister François Bayrou resigned on Monday after losing a vote of no confidence. Previously, Michel Barnier took over after Gabriel Attal’s resignation in September last year, and Bayrou succeeded him in December. France’s government collapsed amid failure to reduce the fiscal deficit.
President Macron has tasked Lecornu with presenting the 2026 budget and securing its approval in parliament. Macron said the new prime minister will consult with all parties in parliament to build consensus on the budget.
