Kathmandu, Sept 10: US President Donald Trump has asked the European Union to impose 100 percent customs duties on imports from China and India as part of his efforts to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, BBC reported citing a source familiar with the talks.

Trump made the request during discussions with EU officials on Tuesday on ways to increase economic pressure on Russia. The Financial Times first reported the proposal.

The move comes as Trump struggles to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine while Russia intensifies its offensive. Before Trump’s proposal, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant had said Washington was ready to increase economic pressure but needed stronger European support.

Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he planned to speak with Putin early this week or next.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US and India were continuing talks to resolve trade barriers and that he planned to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks.

Replying to the post, Modi wrote that “India and the US are deep friends and natural partners,” expressing confidence that ongoing trade talks would help unlock the full potential of the Indo-US partnership.
