Sumana Shrestha quits party but vows to continue reform agenda

Kathmandu, Sept 14: Former lawmaker and social campaigner Sumana Shrestha has announced that she is stepping away from her political party but will continue to work for the reforms she has been advocating.
In a statement, Shrestha said leaving the party does not mean abandoning the agenda of change that she championed during her tenure. She explained that her decision was motivated by internal disagreements over how to implement reforms, but she insisted that her personal commitment to transparency, good governance and social justice remains unchanged.
Shrestha also said she will now focus on building networks with civil society groups, policy makers and young people to push forward her reform programmes outside of party politics. According to her, this approach will allow her to act more independently and bring wider participation to the issues she has been raising.
Observers say Shrestha’s exit could affect the party’s image as a reform-oriented force but may also give her greater freedom to influence public debates.
