Tense scenes at “Hami Nepali” press conference over Gen-Z controversy

Kathmandu, Sept 14: A press conference organised by the group “Hami Nepali” at the Reporters Club turned chaotic on Sunday as emotions ran high over the ongoing controversy surrounding Genji. Sudan Gurung, representing Hami Nepali, was answering questions from the media while seated with the family of a deceased victim when an audience member began pressing him with pointed questions.
According to witnesses, the questioner asked Gurung about the “big change” that had brought a six-month interim government to power, citing the deaths of 51 people during protests. “The House has been dissolved. How has this affected you? Have you been able to implement the case of the direct executive?” the questioner demanded.
Gurung initially responded by asking “How far have you reached?” but the exchange quickly escalated. The questioner retorted that no one would leave now and that “your leader will come in six months,” adding that agitation would begin again.
Visibly agitated, Gurung told the crowd “Aunai dinnaun. Let’s get the leaders out of the house” and then raised his voice, declaring, “This is a change in 80 years of history. We are not the beginning, we are the end.” The heated exchange triggered a commotion, with multiple people speaking at once. Gurung was eventually escorted from the podium.
Amid the uproar, Gurung also addressed accusations about his identity. He warned others against labelling him as Indian, insisting, “I am a son of Nepal. Please don’t call me Indian. Don’t let any media or person attack my reputation. Until now it’s the flag of my country. Some say Indian, some say Barbara Foundation, some say Free-Tibet… Yes, my eyes look like that, but I know my flag.”
The press meet ended without a clear resolution, but the clash reflected the mounting tensions and public frustration surrounding the political upheaval.
