Three ministers inspect damaged parliament building, call for joint reconstruction

Kathmandu, Sept 17: Three senior members of the government on Wednesday visited the parliament complex to assess damage caused during the recent unrest. Finance Minister Dr. Rameshwor Khanal, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising, and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal toured the site and met officials on the ground.
During the inspection, Minister Ghising — who also oversees Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Urban Development — said that the damaged buildings and facilities should be rebuilt collectively. “We have burning and collapsing structures; we must rebuild them together,” he told reporters. Ghising explained that a domestic fund had already been created for this purpose. “Rather than relying on foreign aid, every Nepali at home and abroad can contribute to restoring our national structures,” he added.
Finance Minister Khanal emphasised that reconstruction of existing government infrastructure would be treated as the first priority. He announced that a committee will be established to evaluate the extent of losses linked to the Genji movement and to provide an estimate of the rebuilding costs. “We are forming a committee for this purpose. The committee will assess everything,” Khanal said.
Home Minister Aryal echoed both ministers’ remarks and called for public unity and transparency in the rebuilding process. The inspection marked the government’s first high-level visit to the parliament building since it was damaged during protests.
