Sochi, Russia, Oct 3: Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, describing him as a “wise leader” who always puts his country’s interests first.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin emphasized the strength of India-Russia relations, recalling that the two nations declared a “privileged strategic partnership” 15 years ago. He said the phrase still best defines their ties today.

“I am confident that the people of India will not give up on this relationship. About 15 years ago we announced a privileged strategic partnership, and that is the best definition. Prime Minister Modi is a leader who thinks about his country first,” Putin stated.

His remarks gain significance amid reports of a possible visit to India later this year. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is also expected in New Delhi ahead of the summit to discuss preparations and other bilateral issues.

Lavrov recently told the UN General Assembly that diplomatic preparations were underway, confirming that President Putin is scheduled to visit New Delhi in December.

During his address, Putin also raised concerns about U.S. tariffs and sanctions, noting that India could face an estimated economic loss of around $10 billion if it stopped buying Russian oil. He stressed that Modi would not bow to foreign pressure and would maintain India’s dignity and strategic autonomy.

“This is not a political issue, it’s just an economic calculation. If India abandons our energy resources, it will suffer huge losses and political costs. I know Prime Minister Modi well, and I believe he will make the right decision,” Putin said.

Putin’s comments came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump accused China and India of being the “primary funders” of the Ukraine war by continuing to buy Russian oil.
