Kathmandu, Nov 16: Security measures have been heavily strengthened in Dhaka as arson and violence continue ahead of the verdict against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a crimes against humanity case.

Hasina’s supporters have blocked highways in five districts, including the capital. The government has deployed 12 additional Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) units to maintain law and order, with paramilitary forces patrolling key areas affected by recent arson and vehicle vandalism.

According to BGB headquarters, these forces are stationed across major parts of Dhaka, where several incidents of unrest have been reported. Earlier, the government had already deployed 14 BGB units in Dhaka and nearby districts to prevent further escalation.

Tension has risen as Hasina’s supporters demand the withdrawal of charges against her and the announcement of the February election date. Clashes between Awami League workers and police were reported on Friday.

Two explosions occurred near Dhaka’s international airport the same morning, following nationwide protests called by the Awami League ahead of the November 13 verdict.

In response, activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami marched through several areas of the capital.

The International Criminal Court (ICT) is set to announce its verdict on November 17 in the case accusing Hasina of inciting violence during the 2024 student protests.
