The Path to Restoring Democracy After the Dissolution of Parliament: Elections
Nepalese politics has now reached a complex juncture. After KP Sharma Oli was elected as the president for the third time, defeating Ishwor Pokharel at the UML general convention, his hold within the party has further strengthened. This has made the UML a major contender in the upcoming elections, but the overall situation in the country is very serious. The dissolution of parliament, mass movements, and constitutional crisis have called the democratic system into question. Although Oli’s victory shows the possibility of keeping the leadership united within the UML, internal dissatisfaction and factionalism still persist. This indicates that conflicts within the party may increase in the future.
After the dissolution of parliament, Nepal is in a constitutional vacuum. The legitimacy of the interim government has been questioned, and people are protesting on the streets demanding the maintenance of democratic values. Parties are in a conflict between choosing the path of restoring parliament or holding new elections. The people are clearly demanding the restoration of democratic institutions and elections. This shows that elections are indispensable to regaining the trust of the people.
Elections are the basis of democracy. It institutionalizes the voice of the people, gives legitimacy to the government, and maintains political stability. When a new parliament is formed through elections, parties get the opportunity to present their policies and visions to the people. It creates an environment where the people can directly express their aspirations and demands. Only elections can restore the trust of the people and restore democracy.
Oli’s victory over Ishwor Pokharel is a clear sign of his dominance within the UML. But the situation in the country is still critical. The dissolution of parliament has brought about a constitutional crisis, and the people’s movement is demanding the protection of democratic values. In this situation, elections are the only strong instrument that can restore the trust of the people, restore democracy, and move Nepal forward on the path of stability. Parties need to prioritize elections, otherwise there is a risk that the power struggle will further destabilize the country.
