Thriller at T20 World Cup as South Africa–Afghanistan Match Goes to Second Super Over
Kathmandu, Feb 11: The ICC T20 World Cup witnessed rare drama as two consecutive Super Overs were required to decide the match between South Africa and Afghanistan after neither side could secure victory in regulation play or the first Super Over.
The match was first tied at the end of the scheduled 20 overs, prompting a Super Over. However, the excitement intensified when the first Super Over also ended in a tie, forcing officials to call for a second Super Over. The second Super Over concluded with a total of 17 runs, finally separating the two teams.
In the main match, Afghanistan were chasing a challenging target of 188 runs. Entering the final over, they required 13 runs with just one wicket remaining. On the very first ball of the over, Noor Ahmad was caught at the off-side off a delivery from Kagiso Rabada, but the ball was ruled a no-ball after it crossed the boundary line.
Noor Ahmad later struck a crucial six in the same over, reducing the equation to just two runs needed from the final three deliveries. However, the dramatic twist came when Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out while attempting a second run, resulting in the scores being tied once again.
The extraordinary sequence of events led to back-to-back Super Overs, marking one of the most dramatic finishes of the tournament so far and highlighting the growing competitiveness of Afghanistan against established cricketing nations.
The match is already being described as one of the most thrilling encounters of this T20 World Cup.
