Kathmandu, April 2: Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane has publicly apologized on behalf of the government for the historic injustice faced by the Dalit community.

Speaking in the House of Representatives, Lamichhane referred to the election of his friend Khagendra Sunar and the controversy surrounding him during the election period. He said that even amid uncertainty, Sunar chose to apologize, setting an example.

Using this as a reference, Lamichhane called for a broader acknowledgment of past wrongs, stating that the country should collectively apologize for centuries of injustice against the Dalit community.

He said that for the first time, the House had collectively expressed regret over historical discrimination, describing it not merely as a social mistake but as a deeply rooted and systemic issue.

Lamichhane emphasized that the long-standing practice of untouchability had hindered national development and social harmony. He reiterated that no one should face discrimination based on caste.

“I apologize on behalf of the party, the Prime Minister and the government,” he said, adding that the true value of the apology would be reflected through justice and meaningful change.
