Should Google withdraw its services from Australia?
Australian news producers have experienced a downfall in advertising revenue. Meanwhile, Google’s annual revenue collection through Australian news content is rising every year.
Kathmandu, January 23. After Australia introduced world-first law to make Tech companies like Facebook and Google pay for the Australian news contents, Google has warned the Government of Australia to remove its search engine service all over the nation.
Earlier last week, Google conducted an experiment to determine the value of its service to the Australian news outlets. It had removed the Australian news websites for a small number of users due to which, the news of the Australian channels were not showing up in the search engine.
Facebook and a handful of other companies are also against the new laws. They have warned the Government of Australia to dissolve the laws, or they will have to limit their services to Australia.
However, Australia’s Prime Minister has responded that the lawmakers would not yield to the threats. The government has argued that the search engines who earn through the newsreaders, should share a part of the profit to the journalism industry.
Over the past one and a half-decade, Australian journalism industry have experienced a downfall in the advertising revenue due to which most of the companies are forced to shut down their business. Meanwhile, Google’s annual revenue collection through Australian news content is rising every year.
