Kathmandu, January 21. Gregory Stanton, the founder-director of the Genocide Watch, who is most known for predicting the killing of Tutsis in Rwanda, has recently warned a genocide of Muslims in India’s northern states.
While speaking at a congressional briefing in the United States, on Wednesday, Stanton said that his team has discovered early “signs and processes” of genocide in the Indian state of Assam and Indian-administered Kashmir.
Drew Parallels with Myanmar
According to Stanton, India is experiencing a similar situation to Myanmar. Myanmar’s government implemented discriminatory policies against Rohingya Muslims in 2017. They were proclaimed non-citizens by law, then expelled through genocide and bloodshed.
“What we’re seeing today in India is a very similar plot,” Stanton said, adding that India’s Narendra Modi-led government has adopted similar discriminatory measures towards Muslims.
In 2019, the Modi government enacted the Citizenship Amendment Act, which gave citizenship to religious minorities in Indian-administered Kashmir but excluded Muslims from the scheme.
Modi led BJP Government
Other experts have urged India to take Stanton warning as a serious matter. This is due to the fact that the Modi government has been exhibiting radical behaviour in its support for Hinduism in India.
Furthermore, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has long been criticized for its illicit involvement in the demolition of the Babri Masjid and subsequent riots in 1992.
The Muslims account for only 14% of India’s total population.
