Kathmandu, March 10. The Hungarian Parliament has elected Katalin Novak as the country’s first female president on Thursday. She was previously minister for family policy.
She won by 137 votes. Her opposition was Peter Rona, an economist.
She said in her speech before the vote that women can cook, look after children and be in two places if needed.
Novak said, “We know the power of words but can keep quiet and listen if we have to, and defend our families with a courage beyond that of men’s if danger threatens. It is because I am a woman, and not despite of it, that I want to be a good president of Hungary.”
Forty-four year old Novak is the youngest-ever head of state of Hungary. Her duties are largely ceremonial.
