Portugal’s health minister resigns post pregnant tourist’s death
Kathmandu, September 2. Portugal’s Health Minister Marta Temido resigned after an Indian pregnant woman died while being shifted to hospitals in the country.
The 34 year-old tourist died from a cardiac arrest while being shifted to another hospital as there were no vacancy of natal wards at Santa Maria hospital.
Further, Portugal is facing a crisis in the health sector as hospitals are facing staff shortages in maternity wards along with temporary closing of maternity wards. It has led to government to hire staff from abroad for the gynecology department.
Dr. Temido was the health minister since 2018 and was appreciated for her efforts in handling covid. But, Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa said the woman’s death was “the last straw” leading to the health minister’s resignation.
Moreover, there has been similar cases in Portugal, where two infants died while mothers were transferred between hospitals facing delay.
The tourist’s baby is in good health and was delivered in an emergency caesarean section, according to authorities. An investigation has been launched into the woman’s death.
