Women Lawyer Conference adopts Birgunj Declaration; Demands gender-safety policies

Kathmandu, February 26. On Saturday, the 30th national conference of women lawyers concluded with the adoption of the Birgunj Declaration, which emphasized professional rights and welfare, capacity, and security of women lawyers.

The two-day conference was held in Birgunj Metropolitan City on February 24 and 25. More than 400 female lawyers from across the country attended the event.

Birgunj Declaration is a 30-point declaration aimed at developing gender and professional safety policies to address gender-related issues while also facilitating the entry and retention of women in the legal sector and enhancing their competence.

The declaration sought professional competence enhancement and topic-specific training, as well as basic legal training for new entrants and refresher training for all legal practitioners.

Birgunj declaration also demanded that the government conduct a fair inquiry into cases of crime against women and children and guarantee the victims’ access to justice.
