63% of Nepali industries closed during COVID-19 pandemic still not operating: latest survey
Kathmandu, April 28. On Thursday, the National Statistics Office and Statistics Office in Chitwan jointly organized an event to announce the results of an international category industrial survey in Nepal.
The survey revealed that 63 percent of industries that were closed for four months due to COVID-19 in the country have stopped operating since then. Of the remaining industries, 24 percent are partially operative, and only 13 percent have resumed full operation.
As a result of the pandemic’s impact on industries, 17 percent of laborers had to quit their jobs without any incentive, and 60 percent of them were forced to leave their jobs temporarily. The wage of 11 percent of workers was partially curtailed, and 12 percent experienced delays in receiving their regular wages.
According to Rajesh Dhital, Director at National Statics Office, there are currently 60,185 industries in operation, including 5,017 big industries and 51,094 small ones. The industries are categorized based on human resources.
The survey also revealed that 381,687 people have got direct employment in the industries, and 40 percent of products of Nepali industries have been fully utilized.
