Tragedy Strikes: 3 US Marines Killed and 20 Injured in Military Helicopter Crash During Exercises in Australia
Kathmandu, Aug 28: A tragic accident took place during military exercises in Australia, where three US Marines lost their lives and around 20 others were injured. The incident occurred when a special kind of helicopter, known as the MV-22B Osprey, crashed on its way to a distant area called Tiwi islands. These Marines were part of an event called Predators Run, which involved military personnel from different countries practicing together. The accident happened on Melville Island, close to Darwin, Australia. Some of the injured Marines were taken to a hospital in Darwin, while others received help at the crash site.
This is the second time there has been a fatal helicopter accident during joint military exercises in northern Australia in less than a month. On a similar note, about four Australian soldiers were presumed dead after their helicopter, a 45 MRH-90 Taipan, crashed in July during the Exercise Talisman Sabre, a large training event between Australia and the US. The helicopter involved in the recent accident, the Osprey, is unique because it’s a mix of a helicopter and a plane. This allows it to fly faster than traditional helicopters. However, it has faced challenges before, including a deadly crash in Norway last year.
The incident has led to an outpouring of support, with the Australian Prime Minister expressing sorrow and promising help for the injured. Additional police and defense personnel have been sent to the crash site to support ongoing operations and assist the injured. Investigations will continue to understand the cause of the accident.
