Pakistan Claims Targeting Extremists in Iran; Tensions Rise Over Cross-Border Actions
Kathmandu, Jan 18: Tensions have escalated between Pakistan and Iran as Pakistan claims to have targeted extremists in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province. The Pakistani foreign ministry issued a statement asserting that the individuals targeted were terrorists inciting violence in Pakistan and taking refuge in Iran’s uncontrollable areas.
Senior intelligence officials revealed to Reuters that Pakistan is focusing on Baloch extremists operating within Iran. The statement from Pakistan reported the successful elimination of numerous terrorists in these operations.
Reports from Iranian media indicated that several missiles landed in a village in Iran’s Sistan Baluchistan province, bordering Pakistan. Tragically, three women and four children, not Iranian citizens, lost their lives in the attacks.
In response to the cross-border actions, Iran announced on Tuesday that it was targeting militants linked to Israel inside Pakistan. Pakistan, in turn, condemned the Iranian attack, highlighting the deaths of two children and warning of serious consequences. The responsibility for any repercussions was squarely placed on Iran by Pakistan.
