Kathmandu, April16: Japanese Secretary of State Rosai Akazawa visited Washington on Tuesday to push for a reduction in US customs duties on Japanese goods, particularly vehicles.

According to Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan has requested the US to “re-evaluate the tax” and is aiming to reach a conclusion on the issue “as soon as possible.”

The visit follows last week’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, where both sides agreed to hold talks regarding trade and tariff concerns. However, Prime Minister Ishiba made it clear that Japan would not rush into any compromises.

Although Japan and the US share a close alliance, the US has imposed a 24 percent reciprocal tariff on Japan, along with a 90-day review period. Japanese car giants like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are especially impacted, facing 25 percent customs duties on vehicle exports to the US.

Talks are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
