Election Commission Orders Shutdown of 11 Online Platforms Over Live Opinion Polls
Kathmandu, Feb 26: The Election Commission has directed authorities to shut down 11 online platforms found conducting live opinion polls in violation of the election code of conduct.
According to Commission co-spokesperson Sita Pun, the platforms were recommended for action for running live opinion polls despite the prohibition on such activities ahead of the House of Representatives election on Falgun 21.
Speaking at an “Orientation on Election News and Code of Conduct” program organized for women journalists, Pun said voters should be allowed to freely elect their representatives without undue influence. She stated that opinion polls could unnecessarily sway voters and that strict enforcement of the code of conduct was necessary.
Under Section 23 of the Election Commission Act, 2073, violations of the election code of conduct can result in a fine of Rs. 100,000 and cancellation of candidacy. Pun emphasized that the media has a crucial role in ensuring elections remain free, fair and fearless.
The Commission has enforced the election code of conduct since 12:00 midnight on Magh 4. During the silent period starting from 12:00 midnight on Falgun 18, no propaganda materials are allowed to be published or broadcast through media or social media. The Commission has also deployed 4,300 observers across constituencies for election monitoring.
At the same program, Federation of Nepali Journalists President Nirmala Sharma stressed the importance of adhering to the journalist code of conduct during elections. She urged media professionals to maintain high ethical standards, respect confidentiality, and prepare news content without bias based on region, gender, language or culture, and without personal gain.
