624,000 people leave Kathmandu valley for Dashain amidst pandemic

Kathmandu. Dashain is a major festival for Hindus. Today is the third day of this festival and maximum people are returning to their homes to celebrate the festival with great joy, visiting their loved ones. However, this year will not be the same as the previous years, as the coronavirus pandemic has massively affected the whole country.

The government has requested people to celebrate the festival when and where they are. But around 624,000 people have left Kathmandu for Dashain from the period of 17 September-19 October. According to the Metropolitan Traffic Division, 143,741 vehicles have exited, through which 644,646 passengers have left Kathmandu. Similarly, 570,813 people have entered Kathmandu valley in the past month, according to the Metropolitan Traffic spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rameshwar Prasad Yadav.

Yadav also mentioned that last year 2.4 million people left the valley for the festival. It has been assumed that since the lockdown started, many people who have left the valley have not yet returned, reducing the numbers of people leaving the valley in the current period.
