Kathmandu. The situation of Birgunj became tense today after Indian citizens tried to enter Nepal through the Nepal-India border at Raxaul. The unease was created by the Indian action of  lifting  the restriction on cross-border movements unilaterally.

According to District Police Office Parsa, Indian nationals rushed towards Nepal after India allowed them to cross the customs check point at Raxaul in the Nepal-India border. The Nepali security personnel tried to prevent them from entering Nepal and that  led to disquietude for some time.

SP Gang Panta, chief of District Police Office Parsa said, “India opened the gates without bilateral talks and a large crowd that had gathered at the bordering area wanted to enter Nepal. There was problem for some time, but we have already solved it.” People in tongas, auto rickshaws, motorcycles, cars and other private vehicles had gathered at the Indian side of the border, she informed.

The Raxaul border had been closed for the general public from March 24, 2020 because of the corona pandemic. Nepal government has decided not to open the Birgunj border till November 15, but India opened the border gates today unilaterally.
