Why did Costco Wholesales remove Coconut Milk from its stores?
Monkey’s in Thailand abused to pick up 400 coconuts every day and then get locked in a cage until the next day's shift begins.
Kathmandu. After PETA(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) alleged that monkeys were being used for forced labour in Thailand, multinational store Costco Wholesales including few others like Walgreens, Food Lion, Giant Food and Stop & Shop stopped trading brands of Coconut Milk like Chaokoh.
Earlier in 2019, PETA had started its investigation against the exploitation of such animals like monkeys in Thailand who were forced to pick up to 400 coconuts every day from the trees for commercial purpose. PETA has asked the retailers not to sell such products to prevent violence against animals.
President of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement that no kind of shopkeeper wants monkeys to be chained up and treated like coconut-picking machines. He also said that Costco made the right decision.
Earlier in September, Costco had removed Palmetto Cheese from its stores, after the owner of the pimento cheese brand called Black Lives Matter a “terror organization.”
