US Secretary of State lifts restrictions against Taiwan, move likely to anger China
Kathmandu, January 10. United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has lifted all restrictions against Taiwan, which will enable US officials to maintain contact with their Taiwanese counterparts.
The move is likely to anger China, as China claims to have authority over Taiwan. This decision is also likely to affect the relations between US and China during the last days under the Trump administration.
Pompeo said that the United States (US) had taken such a decision earlier to conciliate Beijing but now he is lifting all the self-imposed restrictions. Taiwan’s representative in the US, Bi-khim Hsiao also applauded the decision and said that they will cherish every opportunity in the bilateral relationship.
Joseph Wu, the foreign minister of Taiwan also thanked Pompeo for uplifting the ‘unnecessary limiting’ restrictions.
Other observers and officials opine that the outgoing Trump administration took such a step to pose difficulties for the incoming Biden administration.
However, a spokesperson for the incoming Biden administration has said that they are committed to the 1979 Taiwan relations act and also to the one-China policy.
