A new truce between Armenia and Azerbaijan crumbles yet again
Kathmandu. A new “humanitarian ceasefire” was agreed upon by Azerbaijan and Armenia to end the violent conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The truce mutually signed by the nations for a ceasefire, that was considered to be in effect from October 26, 2020, 8:00 a.m onwards, as stated by the US State Department, has fallen apart. There had already been a couple of ceasefire agreements prior to this between the two countries, that yielded no results.
A few days ago, talks were held between the two countries in Moscow, Russia, and a new ceasefire was reported after the talks. The ceasefire had been agreed between the two countries in coordination with the US State Department, various nations and international organizations.
Al Jazeera has reported on Monday that Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry released a claim noting that Armenia has violated the truce, shorty after it came into effect. The Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmet Hajiyev, earlier tweeted that the “PM of Armenia is lying over again. Since 08.04 armed forces of Armenia started shelling Tartar region and its villages in violation of humanitarian ceasefire. As reported by MOD Azerbaijan armed forces of Armenia with artillery and mine launchers attacking our forces since 08.05.”
As per Armenia’s defense ministry, the Azeri forces had fired at the Armenian military stationed at the front lines after the ceasefire was brokered. Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan had tweeted that “Despite several provocations, the ceasefire is generally being maintained. The #Armenian side will continue to strictly adhere to the ceasefire regime.” Representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) are due to meet on Thursday yet again to mediate between the two states.
The two countries have been embroiled in the Nagorno-Karabakh land dispute for decades. Attacks have continued since the last war broke out between the two countries on September 27, earlier this year. Many have lost their lives in the recent war between the two countries over the mountainous region. As the war in the area has escalated, the world’s attention has been drawn to it.
