Tatopani transit point reopens
Kathmandu. The Tatopani customs check point in Sindhupalchwok, which had been closed since October 6, has reopened formally from Wednesday.
It had been non-operational for about three months owing to flooding and landslides in the area and resumed operations from October 5. The detection of COVID-19 infection among some Nepali employees, however, led to the closure the next day.
“As agreed between Nepal and China, Chinese side will bring goods at the custom office in Nepal and Nepali workers will transport goods from there,” National News Agency (RSS) quoted Lal Bahadur Khatri, chief of the customs office at Tatopani. “Container trucks would enter into Nepal only on Thursday,” he informed.
The customs check point has resumed operations complying with health protocols. The containers brought to Nepal would be placed in the isolation yard for 12 to 14 hours and then transported to Kathmandu.
Earlier, imports from China would be unloaded at Liping bridge, then loaded and carried to Nepal by Nepali porters and drivers. According to the new arrangement, Nepali workers don’t need to cross the border now.
