Indian Army Chief’s visit expected to initiate Nepal-India foreign secretary level meeting
Kathmandu. Diplomatic talks between Nepal and India are expected to resume after the long awaited 3-day visit of Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane from Wednesday.
The diplomatic relation between Nepal and India started deteriorating in November 2019, when India released a new political map including Kalapani, Lipulek and Limpiyadhura in its territory. When Nepal opposed and claimed the area as a part of its territory, India refused to talk.
The dispute flared up in May, when India’s Defense Minister inaugurated a road in the Kalapani area. Amid public pressure, in response, the Government of Nepal issued a new political map and amended its constitution to include the disputed area.
The Hindustan Times reports that the two countries have taken some important steps over the past few months to rebalancing the ties. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi stopped the distribution of textbooks containing the false political map issued in November whereas, Nepal’s prime minister Oli reshuffled the cabinet.
The Indian newspaper also writes that If India’s COAS courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Oli and bilateral talks with COAS General Purna Chandra Thapa goes well, a suitable environment will be created for foreign secretary-level talks.
