Kathmandu, January 21. Government of the Indian state of Gujarat on Wednesday decided to change the name of dragon fruit to “Kamalam”.

According to the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, “dragon” is not an appropriate name for the fruit which is shaped like a lotus. “Thus we have given it a new Sanskrit name, kamalam.” In Gujarati, Kamal denotes the lotus flower.

Rupani added ‘Though the original name is associated with China, changing the name is not a political act.’
