Man with world’s largest family from Mizoram dead

Ziona Chana, the man with the largest family in the world was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. But family members have refused to perform last rites claiming that he's still alive.

Kathmandu, June 15. Ziona Chana, the man with the largest family in the world has died at 76. He was the head of the family of 38 wives, 89 children and 36 grandchildren.

Doctors have said that his condition already deteriorated at his village in Baktawng Tlangnuam, and declared him brought dead at the hospital. It is said that he suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga tweeted through his Twitter handle to mourn the death of Ziona. He tweeted,”With heavy heart, Mizoram bid farewell to Mr. Zion-a (76), believed to head the world’s largest family, with 38 wives and 89 children. Mizoram and his village at Baktawng Tlangnuam has become a major tourist attraction in the state because of the family. Rest in Peace Sir!”

Chana was head of a community known as “Chana’s sect”

Chana was the head of a religious community called “Chana’s sect” in his village. The sect was founded by Chana’s grandfather in 1942. Around 400 families in the village follow the sect and have adopted polygamy.

He and his family lived in a massive 100-room, four-storied house which was known as “Chuuar Than Run” or New Generation House. It is said that all the family members share a common kitchen and his wives share a dormitory near his private bedroom.

Chana and his family was featured by the show “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” twice in 2011 and 2013.

Chana’s family and mansion have been a major tourist attraction in the region.

Family refuses to perform last rites

In recent developments, the family of Chana have refused to perform his last rites claiming that he is still alive.

They have said that since he is brought from the hospital, his pulse is beating and he is warm.

The Village Council president has said that since they hold them in high regards, they will not perform the last rites until they are convinced that he is no more.
