Nepal votes in support of Ukraine at UNHCR
Kathmandu, March 2. Ukraine has called at UNHCR for an urgent debate regarding the military invasion by Russia.
According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, 29 countries voted in support of an urgent debate on Ukraine’s situation, that included Nepal.
The UNHCR held its 49th session on Monday. It witnessed five states voting against the debate, namely China, Cuba, Eritrea, Russian Federation and Venezuela.
India abstained from the voting event, including 13 other states.
Earlier, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry had released its statement which condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The ministry said that Nepal opposed the use of force in a sovereign country and believed in solving the issue through diplomacy and dialogue. The statement also added that as a member of UN, all members should follow and respect the UN Charter.
As 29 countries voted in favor, the debate is taking place at 3pm on Thursday.
