Kathmandu, February 4. On Friday, a huge group of farmers in the Chitwan district staged a protest at the center of the Narayangarh, demanding for a fair price for their vegetable produce.
During the demonstration, Five tractors loaded with vegetables (tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, cauliflower, and cabbage) were thrown by the farmers around the Pulchowk junction.
“We are forced to demonstrate by dumping our produce on the highway. The government does not make a fair trade environment for internal products. Cheaper vegetables from India have flooded the market,” a farmer said.
The Farmer Struggle Committee, which organized the protest, have urged the federal, provincial, and local governments to limit the import of vegetables from India so that the value of the local product is not affected.
Farmers in Chitwan have been performing commercial farming in an area of about 1,500 hectares. They produce at least 300 metric tonnes of vegetables every day, which are supplied to the markets in Chitwan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Butwal.
