Kathmandu, March 20. Nepal’s wicketkeeper-batsman Aasif Sheikh has been named as the receiver of the prestigious Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Award – 2022 edition.

Sheikh was recognized for his sporting conduct in a Men’s T20 International match between Nepal and Ireland in February 2022.

The award is presented annually by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in association with the BBC in memory of special commentator, Christopher Martin-Jenkins. Jenkins served as a cricket commentator for a very long time on BBC Radio, from 1973 to 2012.

In the 19th over of the Irish innings, Ireland’s Andy McBrine was upended accidentally by bowler Kamal Airee while attempting a run. Despite having an opportunity to run out McBrine, Sheikh refused to take the chance and instead helped him back on his feet. This gesture of sportsmanship and fair play won Sheikh the award.

The award will be officially presented to Sheikh in December this year.
