Beijing, Feb 24: A devastating fire in east China’s Nanjing has resulted in the loss of at least 15 lives, with dozens more sustaining injuries, as confirmed by local authorities.

The fire erupted in a residential building situated in Nanjing’s Yuhuatai district, originating on the first floor where electric motorbikes were stored, according to preliminary investigation findings relayed at a news conference.

Efforts to combat the blaze commenced swiftly, with officials reporting that the fire was brought under control by around 6 am local time. Subsequent search and rescue operations have since been concluded.

Reports from Chinese media indicate that 44 individuals injured in the fire were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, the condition of one individual remains critical, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Emergency services mobilized a considerable response, deploying 25 fire engines to quell the flames and minimize further damage.
