Kathmandu, May 3: The student-led movement condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza has escalated from American campuses to universities across Canada. Demonstrations are underway in more than two dozen universities in the United States, resulting in over two thousand student arrests. Now, Canadian students are joining the chorus of dissent against Israel’s offensive.

At the University of Toronto and McGill University in Montreal, Canadian students have staged protests, including setting up tents on campus grounds. Similar demonstrations have erupted at the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island University, and the University of Ottawa.

Echoing the demands of their American counterparts, Canadian students are calling for an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Gaza. Additionally, they are urging universities to sever ties with products or companies affiliated with Israel.

The anti-Israel protests have reignited a clash of opinions between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. While Trump denounces what he perceives as the potential for jihad in America, Biden emphasizes the importance of peaceful dissent, condemning violence, vandalism, and hatred.

President Biden’s response underscores the delicate balance between upholding the right to protest and maintaining public order, reflecting the ongoing tension surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
