Death Toll Rises to 15 in Train Collision Near New Jalpaiguri, India
Kathmandu, Jun 17: The death toll has risen to 15 following a collision between a freight train and the Kanchenjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri in Darjeeling, India.
The Indian Railway Board confirmed the completion of rescue operations, reporting that 15 people have lost their lives in the tragic accident. The Kanchenjunga Express, which was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah, collided with a goods train at Rangpani near New Jalpaiguri station.
Currently, 60 injured individuals are receiving treatment at the hospital. Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has departed for Darjeeling to oversee the situation.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Railway Minister have all expressed their condolences over the accident.
In response to the tragedy, the government has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The seriously injured will receive ₹2.5 lakh each, while the central government has pledged ₹50,000 for the injured.
