Syrian Rebels Claim Capture of Oil-Rich City Diyar al-Zor
Kathmandu, Dec 11: Syrian rebels have announced the capture of the eastern city of Diyar al-Zor, known for its significant oil reserves.
Hassan Abdul-Ghani, a senior commander of the Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), stated that their forces had “liberated” the city, including its military airport. In a statement, the rebels confirmed they now control the entire city, marking a strategic move to seize the country’s resources following their opposition to former President Bashar al-Assad.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based organization monitoring the conflict, Kurdish forces previously held Diyar al-Zor but have now retreated. Earlier this week, Kurdish forces had taken control of the city after Assad’s forces withdrew.
