US Deportation Flights Return Hundreds of Migrants to Guatemala
Guatemala City, Jan 25: US military planes carrying dozens of migrants have landed in Guatemala as part of efforts by the US to tighten immigration control.
Guatemala’s migration agency confirmed that 265 Guatemalans returned home on three flights. Additionally, four deportation flights were sent to Mexico on Thursday, according to a statement from the White House.
Although Mexico’s government has not confirmed any formal agreement regarding these flights, its foreign ministry stated that it is prepared to work with the US on deporting Mexican citizens, emphasizing that Mexico “will always welcome its citizens with open arms.”
The White House reported that over 1,000 people were arrested within two days, with hundreds deported via military aircraft. Officials called it “the largest deportation operation in history,” citing 538 arrests on Thursday and 593 on Friday.
Regular deportation flights also occurred under former President Joe Biden, with 2024 seeing the highest deportation numbers in a decade—270,000 people removed from the US. During the same year, 113,400 individuals were arrested and investigated.
