Kathmandu, April 25: Resident doctors staged a protest in Maitighar, Kathmandu, on Friday, accusing the government and private institutions of labor exploitation by failing to implement the minimum wage structure prescribed for them.

The demonstrators, led by the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), demanded the immediate implementation of the eighth-level salary structure as determined by the Medical Education Commission. Despite a government decision to provide this level of service benefits to resident doctors, the policy remains unenforced, prompting doctors to take to the streets.

NMA Chairman Dr. Anil Bikram Karki criticized private medical colleges, alleging that they are pressuring resident doctors to return to work without pay. He emphasized that the protests would continue until an environment is created where resident doctors receive the government-mandated minimum wage.

Doctors also expressed concerns over the lack of support for their academic progress and warned of escalating protests if their demands are not addressed. The current demonstration follows a broader wave of professional unrest in Kathmandu, including ongoing protests by teachers and civil servants.
