Kathmandu, January 22. A massive fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in an under-construction building “Manjari” of the Serum Institute of India, Pune.

The tragic incident took place at around 2:45 pm when at least 9 contractual labourers were busy working in the building. The rescue team were able to evacuate four of the workers on time. After 3 hours of struggle, the firefighters were finally able to put down the fire. Five dead bodies were extracted from the sites.

CEO of the company, Adar Poonawalla through his official Twitter handle, offered deepest condolences to the family members of the departed souls. The Institute also announced a compensation amount of INR 25 lakh to each of their families.

Media reports suggest that the production process of the “Covishield” vaccine is not affected by the fire, as the fire broke out away from the facility where the Covid vaccine is manufactured.

The Serum Institute of India is the world’s largest maker of vaccines, spread over 100 acres. At present, it is producing millions of doses of the anti-covid-19 vaccine “Covishield” developed by British-Swedish pharma firm AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
