Kathmandu, February 14. Doug Scott founded charity organization “Community Action Nepal” has raised more than 8.1 million dollars(£6 million) for the poor mountain communities in Nepal.

Scott and his 18-member team were the first UK climbers to summit Mt. Everest on 24 September 1975.

In 1977, Scott and his team became the first climbers to reach the top of Baintha Brakk, Pakistan. Unfortunately, during their descent, Scott fell from a cliff breaking both legs. It took almost a week for the team and locals to get him to the base camp. The battle against death became the turning point in his life when he decided to step into charitable work.

In 1989, Scott founded Community Action Nepal(CAN) and began working for the poor mountain communities of Nepal.

So far, over 2.5 lakhs of people have been benefited from 45 social welfare projects supported by CAN. CAN has established 20 health posts, 15 schools, 3 porter rescue shelters and 7 community buildings in Nepal.

On the morning of December 7, 2020, Scott died of cancer at the age of 79, at his residence in Lake District, UK.

In spite of his illness, Scott pushed himself to the limits during the pandemic lockdown and climbed his indoor staircase wearing the iconic snowsuit that he had worn while climbing Mt. Everest. CAN call it a “Virtual Everest Stairs Challenge”, to raise funds for Covid-19 response. The challenge topped over £6 million dollars through participants from all over the world. The youngest participant was a 10-month old baby boy who crawled over his indoor staircase.
