Cambodia’s new Internet Firewall System; could be a threat to Freedom of Expression
Kathmandu, February 18. With the aim of managing internet traffic, the Government of Cambodia has introduced a National Internet Gateway.
On Tuesday, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen signed an 11-page sub-decree which states that an operator will be assigned to set up and handle one-stop system of National Gateway which will be the control point for all the internet connections.
Media reports suggest that the government led by Hun Sen is facing severe criticism for introducing a “China-style Great firewall” that threatens the people’s right to freedom of expression.
The action by the Cambodian government stems from the rapidly increasing internet users in the country. 14.8 million people are using mobile internet services and 2.5 million are using fixed broadband services.
The official spokesperson Phay Siphan announces that the government is aiming to preserve national order, maintain security as well as strengthen the revenue collection through the management of domestic and international traffic. He said, “It would prevent online crime and promote national interests.”
