India hits new high for COVID-19 cases and deaths, hospitals pleads for oxygen

Kathmandu, April 24. India’s daily COVID-19 new cases reached 332,730 and new deaths hit 2,263 during the past 24 hours, both hitting historic high, the government health ministry said Friday.

Major hospitals in New Delhi have been struggling to meet the oxygen supplies hence requesting on social media to save their patients. More than a dozen people died when an oxygen-fed fire ripped through a coronavirus ward in a populous western state.

India kicked off a nationwide vaccination drive in January, and so far over 135 million vaccination doses have been administered across the country.

The national capital Delhi, one of the most affected places in the country, witnessed 26,169 new cases and 306 deaths through Thursday. Delhi’s health department said that so far 13,193 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19. Delhi has been put under a weeklong lockdown till April 26.

The Press Trust of India news agency has revealed that the Defense Ministry will be flying 23 mobile oxygen generating plants from Germany to help with the shortage.
