Indian government requests social media to remove posts containing ‘Indian variant’
Kathmandu, May 23. On Friday, the Indian Ministry of IT released new guidelines advising social media platforms to remove all contents associated with the term “Indian Variant”.
According to the advisory, the World Health Organization has not mentioned the B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus as an ‘Indian variant’. The term indian variant is a false concept that is spreading across the globe through news and social media platforms.
The guidelines were released shortly after the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal entered into controversy for uttering ‘Singapore variant’. These kinds of taggings references are roots to discrimination and inequality.
With over 500 million users, India is one of the world’s biggest markets for web based platforms like Google, Facebook and Twitter.
