US Grocers may be devoid of grapes soon
Kathmandu, May 25. People who love grapes may have a hard time in finding those in US grocers soon. Chile, the world’s number one exporter of grapes have faced heavy and unusual downpours, which have impacted the harvest.
Around 40% of the grape produce have been left unusable by the downpours. The prices could increase in the coming months, with US fetching 5% more in some varieties of grapes, according to government data.
Increase in price of retail grapes could cause food inflation, with grocery prices already increasing globally due to the pandemic.
“Table grapes” is the variety of grapes people eat. It is of two types- red and white. The people who love red one do not need to worry. But the supply of white ones (known as green in the US) could have their supply affected.
Owners from grapes importing and exporting companies in the US have predicted that the prices will go up as soon as the supply is affected. They have said that US and Canada would have consumed about half of the grapes that were lost due to the rain in Chile.
With the grape shortage, citrus fruits and strawberries could come out as winners, owners say.
