UK Newspaper claims Nepali Origin of Coronavirus, Embassy asks to correct the “baseless” news
Kathmandu, June 4. On Thursday, the UK newspaper Daily Mail published an exclusive story claiming the origin of the mutant strain of SARS-Cov-2 in Nepal.
According to the news report, the ‘potentially more infectious and vaccine resistant’ strain of coronavirus originated in Nepal, which resembled closely to the variant found in India but has new mutations. And, the dangerous variant was first found in thirteen travelers on flights from Nepal to Japan.
Hours later, the London-based Nepali embassy rejected the report by calling it “baseless”.
The official statement issued by the embassy reads, “The variants of concern identified in Nepal so far are Alpha and Delta, both of which did not originate there.”
“The World Health Organization has rebutted the origin of a new variant in Nepal stating that the prevalent variant currently in circulation in Nepal is Delta (B.1.617.2),” the statement adds.
The embassy also wrote a letter to the news publisher, requesting a major correction.
