“Amma canteens” to serve free meals in flood-Hit Chennai

Kathmandu, November 9. The government of Tamil Nadu has announced that “Amma Canteens” will provide free food to the flood-hit families in Chennai.

Amma Canteens were established in 2013 as a subsidized food programme by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The food program won the hearts of the public by providing healthy food at the cheapest price. The people called it “Amma Canteen”. Amma Canteens are operated by Greater Chennai Corporation, the food wing of Tamil Nadu’s government. 

On Tuesday, the Greater Chennai Corporation announced that the subsidized food program will supply 3 meals per person in the flood-hit Chennai. The meals will include highly nutritious south Indian recipes of idli, sambar, lemon rice, etc. 

Since October this year, Tamil Nadu has been experiencing 46 percent excess rainfall. This week, the state sustained heavy downpours. As a result, numerous villages submerged in flooding rainwater. The Greater Chennai Corporation has installed 570 electric pumps to remove floodwater.
