Taliban continue marginalizing women in Afghanistan; Orders women to wear burkha in public

Kathmandu, May 7. On Saturday, the Taliban announced the most severe restrictions, ordering all women in the country to entirely cover their bodies with traditional burkhas whenever they come out in public.
Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada, who is currently ruling the country as a supreme leader, made a statement that women must avoid provocation when meeting men. ‘The best way is to remain inside their homes … however if anyone wants to step out, must wear traditional and respectful Chadari (Afghan Burkha),” Akhundzada said.
The international organization community started accusing the Taliban’s actions as a move toward further marginalization of women in Islamic society. This is not the first time the Taliban has limited women’s freedom. After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in mid-August last year, they imposed multiple restrictions on women.
Authorities forbid women from pursuing secondary school, applying for government positions, or traveling outside of their cities. In the capital city of Kabul, women are not allowed to open beauty salons.
