Nepal prepares to host 7th International “Peacekeeping” Symposium in second week of June
Kathmandu, February 9. The government of Nepal in collaboration with the United Nations, is preparing to organize an international symposium event on “Partnership for Technology in Peacekeeping”.
The four-day symposium event will begin on June 12 and run through June 15.
Nepali Defence Ministry announced on Thursday that the 7th edition of the international symposium will serve as a forum for member countries to share experiences on technology, challenges, and best practices in peacekeeping missions in the context of rapid technological development and growing security threats, the Nepali Defense Ministry announced on Thursday.
Ministry spokesperson Prakash Poudel informed reporters that the event would be supported by the UN Department of Operational Support and the Office of Information and Communications Technology..
“300 participants comprising representatives and experts of the UN, peacekeeper deploying countries and support organizations would participate in the event,” Poudel said.
Nepal in UN Peacekeeping
Nepal is currently the second-largest contributor to peacekeeping operations. At present, 6,059 Nepali Army personnel including 506 female soldiers are deployed in 12 different missions.
The Nepali Army joined the United Nations Peacekeeping in 1948. Since then, more than One hundred forty thousand Nepali army personnel have served in 44 missions around the globe.
According to the Nepali Army database, 72 of its members lost their lives and 66 lost their appendages while in peacekeeping missions.
Nepal has a future commitment to provide up to 10,000 peacekeepers to the UN missions.
