Kathmandu, May 12. An epidemic outbreak of lumpy skin infection has been reported in Humla district over the past two weeks, affecting domesticated animals on a large scale.
Krishna Rokaya, the Acting Chief of Livestock Hospital and Livestock Service Office in Humla, revealed that the office has been receiving daily reports of cattle deaths and lumpy skin infections. “The situation is alarming, with a total of 127 domesticated animals succumbing to the disease in five rural municipalities of the district,” Rokaya noted.
He further explained that the highest death tolls were recorded in Kharpunath Rural Municipality in Simikot with 41 animals lost, followed by Namkha with 10 and Adanchuli with 13. The total number of infected animals has reached 1,639. “Animals affected by the disease exhibit symptoms such as high fever and wounds on their bodies. Milk-producing cows are particularly vulnerable to this ailment,” he added.
“This is the first time such a disease has been observed in the district. It is believed to have originated from 240 cows brought from Nepalgunj and Surkhet. The cows were transported to Humla through Adanchuli, Tajkot, and the district headquarters, along the southern region of the district,” he said.
